Water4Life Mozambique is a nonprofit organization committed to providing clean, safe drinking water to rural communities in Mozambique by drilling wells in underserved villages. Each well serves approximately 1,200 people and is funded entirely by donations, with 100% of contributions going directly to well construction. The organization’s work improves health, empowers communities, and enables children, especially girls, to attend school by eliminating the need for long walks to collect water.
This full-time contract position is located at the Mozambique Headquarters in Xai-Xai.
Start date would be February 17, 2026.
Job Overview: We are hiring a Director of Drilling fluent in English and local languages (e.g., Changana, Portuguese) to oversee all on-site water well drilling operations based out of our Mozambique Headquarters in Xai-Xai. Reporting to the CEO and our Mozambique Country Director, Latim, you will lead drilling teams, ensure high-quality well construction, and collaborate with the Operations Overseer on scheduling and in-office coordination.
This role requires strong technical knowledge, leadership, communication, and organizational skills to deliver impactful water access projects. On this job, you should expect to collaborate with various team members who are based in Mozambique and the United States.
RESPONSIBILITIES
We are a mission-driven organization dedicated to providing clean water through water well drilling in Mozambique. Our goal is to transform communities by ensuring access to safe water, and we are seeking a skilled Director of Drilling to lead our field operations at our headquarters in Xai-Xai.
- Key Responsibilities:
- Drilling Operations Management: Oversee all on-site water well drilling activities, including site assessments, drilling, cement sanitation apron construction, and pump installations, ensuring safety, quality, and efficiency.
- Team Leadership: Lead and supervise drilling teams, providing training, guidance, and clear task delegation to maintain high performance and adherence to standards.
- Scheduling Collaboration: Work closely with the Operations Overseer to plan and coordinate drilling schedules, aligning field operations with organizational priorities.
- Technical Oversight: Ensure proper use and maintenance of drilling equipment, tools, and materials, troubleshooting issues to minimize downtime.
- Community Engagement: Interact with local communities to assess needs, explain drilling processes, and ensure community buy-in, using fluency in local languages.
- Quality Control: Monitor and verify the quality of drilled wells, sanitation aprons, and pump installations, ensuring compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.
- Reporting: Provide regular updates on drilling progress, challenges, and outcomes to the CEO, Country Director, and Operations Overseer, contributing to operational reports.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce safety protocols and ensure all drilling activities comply with local regulations and organizational policies.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Fluency in English and local languages (e.g., Changana, Portuguese) for effective communication with teams and communities.
- Proven experience in water well drilling, construction, or a related technical field, with at least 3-5 years of supervisory experience.
- Strong technical knowledge of drilling equipment, techniques, and well construction processes.
- Exceptional leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and coordinate field teams.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage rural communities, team members, and senior leadership.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to collaborate on scheduling and manage multiple field projects.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office) for reporting and coordination.
- Ability to work in challenging field conditions, with adaptability and problem-solving skills.
